Fashion design and interior design, both passions of mine, have been a part of my life since I can remember. I was fortunate to have studied design and architecture in college leading me into my dream career. One of the things I enjoy most is being able to create a personalized story through design for each new client I meet. There is a striking similarity in the way fashion design and interior design guide self expression. Both involve studying lifestyle, trends, sketching designs and experimenting with fabric and color combinations. There is an obvious connection between how people dress and how they decorate their home with influences rubbing off on one another.
When meeting a client for the first time, their outfit tends to be a key source of inspiration. I am able to customize story boards with a variety of materials and selections simply by studying the way a person dresses. Below are two examples of compiled materials (including textured fabrics, rich leather and brass accents) all of which were inspired by simple wardrobe accessories…earrings. With observation and creative thinking, these story boards were each designed to tell a unique story…
The selections pictured above were centered around a stunning pair of lion earrings (in honor of Leo season…also my birthday month)!
Using myself as an example, the way I dress portrays myself as a professional and creative designer. I live in a tunnel full of color, texture and composition which all tend to sneak their way into my daily wardrobe choices. I love a neutral color palette with colorful accessories which you may also notice in my designs. A mix of textures are a must for me both in fashion and interior design. I love unique accents (such as geometrical gold or brass accents) in a home that often holds true in my accessories. Layering is another key design principle for me as my days are often unpredictable. I may start off at my showroom and quickly transition to a construction site which is why an outfit with multiple layers tends to be a dependable choice for my work. Interior design also involves multiple layers and much detail.
So if you’re standing in your home wondering where to start with redecorating, start with fashion – take a look at your wardrobe and find your favorite pieces that speak to you. Study the colors, texture and feeling using this as a tool to help pinpoint your style and decor choices.
