As a designer my goal is to enhance a space based on a clients style and functional needs. It is important to understand different styles whether it be traditional, minimalist, rustic, coastal, etc. Selections such as furniture, lighting and artwork should be carefully selected to complement the style. These details often complete the look and bring character to the space. You may be wondering what makes each style unique or questioning what your own design preferences are. I want to talk about a few styles which I see trending this year. Modern farmhouse and transitional are two of the more popular styles trending in 2020. For examples on both of these, check out my most recent projects below.
Transitional – without making a commitment to one or the other, this style balances both traditional and modern elements. With a mix of decor and maybe even showing off some inherited antiques – you’re sure to have a home completely unique to you. I love the transitional look because it presents so many possibilities! The cohesive blend creates warmth and beauty in one space making the room feel comfortable with a personal touch.
In the home below we chose a simple shaker door with modern brass hardware. You’ll notice traditional decor throughout the home with simple yet modern tables to balance the space. The kitchen lends a more modern feel while the bedroom setting feels more traditional with its elegant window treatments and accent furniture.
Modern Farmhouse – When we talk about modern farmhouse, we think of a comfortable space designed with neutral tones and natural materials. The farmhouse look would not be complete without natural wood elements. This style has become popular amongst younger families with a relaxed spirit and practicality in mind.
A farmhouse sink, marble countertops and industrial elements were thoughtfully sourced for this beautiful modern farmhouse kitchen. We mixed up the cabinetry to feature white painted cabinets in the kitchen (pairing well with the wood flooring) while the bathroom vanities were designed to feel natural and organic. Linen and leather furniture remain neutral in tone but add texture to the space. These open spaces were designed with functionality in mind while soaking up loads of natural light!
