Textured laminate cabinetry is quickly becoming a favorite for clients who prefer a modern design; something beyond the ordinary wood or painted look. With its unique look, it is important to understand how to use textured laminates so they don’t clash with other materials. You can now think beyond laminate countertops which is what most people think of when we mention the word ‘laminate’. Cabinet manufacturers continue to introduce a variety of textures and patterns with quality high-pressured technology making it a win for durability and style.
This material is ideal for homeowners who are looking for an easy-care product since it cleans easily with warm water, mild soap and a cloth. Unlike wood cabinets, laminate is not as susceptible to changes in temperature and humidity. For families with children or high traffic areas, this type of cabinetry is ideal. With its affordable price point, I have also used it in my mixed-use projects. Below is a storyboard from a mixed-use development (Agave Lofts) that incorporates textured laminate cabinetry. We carefully selected the fixtures, hardware, flooring and colors to complement each other. This project is currently under construction but I will definitely post photos of the final project once it’s complete!
Dialing into the design details, I want to point out a few amazing features that textured laminates offer. Grain matching across doors and drawer fronts has never been easier. This also allows us to play with the direction of the grain… horizontal being a popular choice at the moment. You can get similar characteristics of natural wood grain but without the wide variation of grain pattern and coloration. So for a custom project where unity on the grain is important, this can be the perfect product. With a similar look of real wood, these also pair well with more traditional opaques by adding texture to a space or softening the look. For those of you who know me or my style, you know I love to mix and match!
Pictured above are a few of Schrock’s newest Specialty Laminates offered at Troo Designs. I love that these beautiful styles offer the same luxe as wood but with cost savings. Although I am discussing textured options, I can’t forget to mention the endless choice of solid colors and gloss that are also being produced with laminate.
